Vinaya, thank you so much! I needed this right now. This essay was written a few years ago (I think my first one Medium) and I have had more time to reflect on the interrelated issues of casteism and speciesism. There has been a lot of push back from various factions, and the only reason I persist is because, I am right — of course I am! A lot ARAs/vegans of upper caste lineage (let’s face it, most Indian vegans are) do not want to hear about caste oppression. They don’t understand that in the long run, acknowledging all types of privilege is going to HELP to advance animal rights, not hinder them.
Please listen to my podcast with the Vegan Vanguard if you can. It was intended towards western audience, and you might know most of the content, but the interesting part is how little westerners know about India.
